For parents of high schoolers aiming for the most selective colleges

Half of my students finish in the top 1% of SAT takers.

That’s the kind of score that opens the doors to the best colleges. I find exactly where your student loses points, coach them one-on-one, and guarantee a 1500 or a 200-point gain.

  • My students’ median final score is 1530, the 99th percentile.
  • Students I’ve coached have been accepted to Duke, Brown, Penn, USC, Tufts and Barnard.
  • I teach the same system that earned me perfect scores in both Math and English on the official SAT.

Has your student’s score stopped improving?

Many families come to me after trying the sensible things first: Khan Academy, the school’s prep course, sometimes another tutor or a tutoring company. If that’s where you are, some of this probably sounds familiar:

  • Your student’s practice tests looked fine, then the official score came back lower, and the next test date is only weeks away.
  • Your student puts in the hours, but the material doesn’t seem to stick, so more of the same practice adds very little.
  • The score has settled in the 1400s, the colleges on the list want 1500+, and nobody can tell you what the last stretch takes.
  • AP classes and activities already fill the week, so every hour of prep has to count.
  • You don’t know what you don’t know: which test date, how many hours, when to retake, whether to superscore.

After 10,000 hours of one-on-one coaching, I know how to find the cause of every point your student misses

I call it the Every-Question Diagnosis.

Your student takes an official practice test in Bluebook, the College Board’s own testing app. I go through every wrong answer and sort it by cause: a gap in the content, a timing problem, or a habit that costs points under pressure.

Those causes decide what we work on. Each session and each piece of homework targets the mistakes your student makes, so no hour goes on material they already know.

Free prep gives every student the same practice, and a prep course teaches the whole test to the whole room. Here’s what the mother of one of my students said after a tutoring company hadn’t moved her daughter’s score:

“He worked through the curriculum in a clear, systematic way, quickly identifying the areas where my daughter needed the most support.”

I built my course by working through every SAT question the College Board has released. So I teach the math and reading behind each question, which holds up on test day when a familiar trick doesn’t fit.

Your student spends the months before test day with a 14-year SAT specialist in their corner

Your student does the work, and I make sure every hour of it counts.

  1. After the first practice test, you’ll know exactly which points your student is losing and why.
  2. You’ll have a plan with a test date, a weekly schedule and an estimate of the hours it will take.
  3. After every session I set homework built around your student’s own mistakes, and I go through it with them at the next session.
  4. Your student walks into the test room having already beaten the question types that used to cost them points.
  5. When the score comes back, you’ll know the next move: retake, superscore, or apply with what you have.
  6. And when the score arrives, your student can apply to the colleges they dreamed about.

Here’s what parents told me when the scores came in, and the acceptance letters after them

An opened acceptance letter with a crimson wax seal on a sunlit kitchen table
“While I was driving one day, I got a call from my daughter telling me that she was accepted early decision to her dream school. I could hardly understand her on the phone. She was crying so hard with joy that she could barely speak.”
Caroline O’Brien. Her daughter went from about 580 on her first practice math test to a 770 on the real SAT.
“Before working with John, we had consulted with other tutors and even tried a tutoring company, but my daughter’s practice test scores had plateaued. John was the one who ultimately helped her break through that ceiling and achieve her goal.”
Sonali Patel-Mathew. Her daughter earned a 1580 on her first SAT after nine sessions.
“John did an excellent job with SAT tutoring for my son. The score improved from a 1320 on Practice Exam to a 1580 on the actual test. John is clear, structured, and highly effective at building both skills and confidence.”
Xinming Cai
“My daughter Maia scored a 1230 on her PSAT, then jumped 310 points on her SAT to 1540 after working with John. Really incredible! That 1540 definitely helped her gain admission to USC, Northeastern, Barnard, Tufts, and Penn.”
John Hoffman
“In just 11 hours of tutoring (plus countless hours of completing assignments and recording weak points), my SAT score rose dramatically from 1230 to 1510...”

How we’d work together, from first call to test day

  1. Step 1. A free 30-minute consultation on Zoom.

You tell me where your student is now, what they’ve tried and when they test.

I tell you whether I can help, how many hours I’d expect it to take, and which plan fits. If a smaller plan would do the job, I’ll recommend it.

  2. Step 2. The Every-Question Diagnosis.

Your student takes an official Bluebook practice test, and I go through every question they miss to find the patterns behind the lost points.

  3. Step 3. One-on-one sessions, with homework after every one.

Sessions run on Zoom with a shared whiteboard, or in person near Boston. After each session your student gets specific homework: my own short lesson videos, problem sets and official practice tests.

  4. Step 4. You hear from me between sessions.

I reply to parents quickly, and I help with the decisions around the test: when to retake, whether to superscore, and when applying test-optional is the smarter move.

How many hours it takes

The number depends on your student’s starting score, their goal and the weeks left before test day, so I give you a figure on the consultation. Here’s the range parents and students describe in their reviews:

  • A student of mine raised her score by 150 points in 6 hours over 3 weeks.
  • Another went from 1230 to 1510 in 11 hours.
  • Another earned a 1580 on her first SAT after nine sessions.
  • Another went from 1300 to 1520 over about three months, at 2 to 3 hours a week.

The Top 1% Program

30 hours of one-on-one coaching with me, for $7,500.

  • The Every-Question Diagnosis on an official Bluebook practice test, so every session starts from the points your student lost.
  • 30 hours of one-on-one sessions with me on Zoom or in person near Boston.
  • Homework after every session, built from your student’s own mistakes.
  • A review of every official practice test your student takes during the program.
  • Replies between sessions, plus help with retakes, superscoring and test-optional decisions.
  • Any hours left after the SAT can go toward college essays or AP math.
  • The 1500-or-200 Guarantee.

Booked by the hour at $400, the same 30 hours would cost $12,000. The Top 1% Program saves you $4,500, and it’s the only plan that carries the guarantee.

If your student is already close to their goal, they may need fewer hours, so I also offer a shorter Finisher Program and sessions by the hour at $400. We’ll choose on the consultation.

My guarantee

Before I take on a student, I look at where they are and where they want to be. I only say yes when I’m confident I can get them there, and that’s why I can put a guarantee on the result.

Your student finishes with a 1500 or higher, or with at least 200 points more than where they started. Either one meets the guarantee. A student who starts at 1380 meets it at 1500. A student who starts at 1150 meets it at 1350.

The starting score is the one your student earns on their first Bluebook practice test with me. If your student does the homework and reaches neither, I keep coaching them for free until they do.

A risk-free first hour

If you’re not happy after the first coaching hour, you don’t pay for it. That promise applies to every plan.

$400 an hour is small next to what a top college is worth

I’m among the most expensive SAT tutors in the country, and I’d rather tell you here than on the call.

Here’s why families still call it a bargain. Economists at Harvard and Brown compared students admitted to Ivy-Plus colleges (the Ivy League plus Stanford, MIT, Duke and Chicago) with similar students who went to strong public universities instead.

Attending an Ivy-Plus college raised a student’s chances of reaching the top 1% of earners by 50%.

It nearly doubled their chances of going to an elite graduate school,

and it almost tripled their chances of working at a prestigious firm.

A strong SAT score is one of the things that gets a student through those gates. When that much rides on one result, most families want the person with the record, the same way you’d want the most experienced surgeon for an operation that matters. Next to a career like that, 30 hours of coaching is one of the best investments you’ll make in your child’s future.

Every session is with me, so I take on 4 new students a month.

Who I work with

This is for you if:

  • Your student is aiming for 1500+ or a jump of 200 points or more.
  • Your student will do the homework between sessions.
  • You want one specialist who knows the test and learns exactly how your student loses points.
  • The SAT is part of a bigger plan, such as early decision, scholarships or a reach school.

It’s probably not for you if:

  • You’re choosing a tutor mainly on the hourly rate.
  • You’re looking for a group class.
  • Your student isn’t ready to put in the work yet.

What Every Parent Should Know About the SAT

My free guide to the SAT myths that cost students points, and what to do instead. Read it before you pay anyone for prep, including me.

Questions parents ask me

My student is already in the 1400s. Is tutoring still worth it?

Many of the families who contact me already have a score in the 1400s and want 1500+. Most of my work happens in that last stretch, and it’s why my students’ median final score is 1530.

What does a 1530 actually mean?

On College Board’s own table, a 1530 is the 99th percentile of SAT takers. The national average for the class of 2025 was about 1029.

How many hours will it take?

It depends on the starting score, the goal and the time left, so I give you a number on the consultation. Parents and students in my reviews describe gains of 150 points in 6 hours and 280 points in 11 hours.

When should we start?

Tell me the test date on the consultation and I’ll tell you what’s achievable by then. More time gives more room, but short plans can work.

What do we lose by waiting?

Mostly test dates. There are only a handful before application deadlines, and I take on 4 new students a month.

How is this different from Khan Academy or a prep course?

Those give every student the same material. I start from your student’s own missed questions and build each session around them, one-on-one.

Why do you charge more than other tutors?

Because the result matters, and half of my students finish in the top 1%. The consultation is free, the first hour is risk-free, and the Top 1% Program carries the 1500-or-200 Guarantee.

What if my student doesn’t click with you?

If you’re not happy after the first coaching hour, you don’t pay for it.

Online or in person?

Online on Zoom with a shared whiteboard, wherever you live. In person in Waltham, Newton and nearby towns.

Do you help with college applications too?

Yes. Many families keep working with me on test-optional decisions, early decision strategy, essays and AP math.

What happens after the consultation?

If you want to go ahead, I send a plan with the hours, the schedule and the price, and we book the first session.

How does payment work?

You pay for the Top 1% Program up front through a secure online invoice. Hourly sessions are invoiced as you go.
